When moving your rear wheels, the jack screw is used to separate the wheel locking wedges so the pinion gear can move the loosened wheel where desired on the axel. Jack screws are always returned to a loose, non contact condition when not in use. This is the reason for the retainer, so they won't fall out. When removing any jack screw from the wheel, always remove the retainer first. Always think of the jack screw as your tractors portable jack for wheel positioning.
